Autora estadounidense. Comenzó escribiendo historias infantiles cuando enviudó súbitamente y quedó con dos hijos pequeños a su cargo. Tras su primer libro, Irvington Stories [Historias de Irvington] (1864), publicó Hans Brinker; o, los patines de plata (1865), que se convirtió en un clásico infantil. En 1873 fue nombrada editora de la nueva revista infantil St. Nicholas, cuyo éxito emanaba de los altos estándares de calidad que ella exigía, los cuales atrajeron a escritores como Mark Twain,Louisa May Alcott, Robert Louis Stevenson y Rudyard Kipling.
